The protests against Haryana minister of sports and youth affairs Sukhbir Kataria in the 2009 bogus votes case took a political turn on Tuesday with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leading the demonstrations.

A day after Kataria’s supporters, including his relatives, assaulted two men owing allegiance to an NGO that had filed a court petition in the case, BJP state president Ram Bilas Sharma met Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal demanding action against the culprits.

A fresh criminal complaint against the minister’s kin has also been filed by the NGO, Matdata Jagrookta Manch, in court.

Kataria was an independent candidate and represents Gurgaon in the state assembly.

The minister’s men allegedly got enraged after a court official visited Kataria’s house on Monday to serve summons for March 25 in connection with the bogus votes case.

Accusing the police of acting under the influence of the minister, Sharma alleged that despite enough evidence against Kataria, law was not catching up with him.

The BJP leader also said he has appealed to Haryana governor Jagannath Pahadia to remove Kataria from the state cabinet.

Meanwhile, AAP activists and members of Matdata Jagrookta Manch gheraoed the Sector -5 police station in Gurgaon where the two assault victims were allegedly detained after the clash.

One of them, Rakesh Kumar, is admitted in the ICU of a private hospital as he is a heart patient.

The police, on the other hand, denied the allegations even as no FIR has been registered in the case yet.

OP Kataria, general secretary of the NGO, claimed “his aides had gone to help the court official locate the minister’s house” when the incident took place.

In its 2009 petition, the NGO had alleged that Kataria got 17 of his relatives to acquire forged documents and obtain multiple voter cards.
