The Gurgaon-Jaipur Expressway, also called the Pink City Express, has been plagued by inordinate delays on several accounts, ranging from technical glitches, land acquisition problems to sheer ineptitude on part of the officials.
Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh has even sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue of slow pace of construction work on the Haryana section of NH-8 between Delhi and Shajahanpur in Rajasthan.
In his letter to the PM, the MP had pointed out that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had undertaken the 8-laning of the section a number of years ago but the work had continued at snail’s pace, leading to traffic congestion and accidents.
The MP had also raised a finger at the lax attitude of the contractor in finishing the work.
NHAI chairman CP Joshi had also visited the stretch with Rao. In December last year, the residents of Manesar had threatened to block the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway due to increasing problems being faced by the local commuters.
The NHAI had blamed the Gurgaon administration for ‘paralysed’ construction work on the stretch falling between Manesar and Dharuhera, saying that it was the latter’s fault which had resulted in the delay.
The then regional officer (RO) of NHAI, PR Patelia, had said that the local administration had to acquire around 16-17 acres of land from the locals, which it had failed to do.
“The land acquisition problem has been delaying the project. The NHAI has taken up the matter with Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, seeking his intervention in clearing the land acquisition matter at the earliest. Land is required at several places between Gurgaon and Dharuhera for traffic diversions and service roads,” Patelia had said.
