Concerned over the spread of mosquito-borne diseases during monsoon, the district health department seems to have become pro-active this time to curb the menace.

As part of preventive measures, the district malaria officer of Friday conducted training for the laboratory staff of all the primary health centres. The training was held at Jacobpura, where about 15-16 laboratory technicians shared tips on how to collect samples and spread awareness to check mosquito breeding.

“A team from Chandigarh had come on Thursday to collect stagnant water samples to check for malaria. We visited some five places in the district to collect samples. Our team is ready to tackle the diseases,” said Dr Parveen Garg, civil surgeon of Gurgaon district.

According to experts, moist weather and stagnation of water during rains play a vital role in mosquito breeding, causing risks of malaria, dengue and other such infections among humans. “Swine flu is almost over. We hardly receive any cases anymore. Now we are getting ready for dengue and malaria,” said a health department official.

This year, the district has witnessed 112 swine flu cases, including three deaths, so far. The health department has already registered six cases of malaria- three in February and three in March.“As soon as we enter the peak summers, the breeding will stop. Again, the monsoons will trigger the breeding cycle,” said Dr Vishal Sehgal of the Artemis Health Sciences.
