As deliberations between the Haryana government and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) over the return of about 1,400 acres of land back to the state near completion, Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh has requested the railway ministry to set up a rail coach factory at the city land that was acquired for special economic zone.

Singh has written a letter to railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in this regard. “If a rail coach factory is set up here, it will benefit the local villages and bring revenue to the Haryana government,” Singh said.

The MP said that the state government would no more have to go through the tedious and lengthy process of land acquisition from farmers again for the rail coach factory if the Union ministry showed its interest for the same.

The SEZ was to be set up through a special purpose vehicle — Reliance Haryana SEZ Ltd — created after a collaboration between Reliance Ventures, a wholly owned subsidiary of RIL, and HSIIDC. RIL had 90% stake in the project while HSIIDC held a10% sweat equity in the project in the form of 1,383 acres of land it contributed in the project.

The Gurgaon MP has also asked Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to return the land to farmers if no project materialised on it.

“I have also taken up the matter with CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda and written to him saying that his government should consider returning the land to its original owners, the farmers, as no project came up on this land in over six years,” Singh said.

The farmers, whose land was acquired in 2006 for the SEZ project, have been demanding their land back. They have been on dharna at Garoli village under the banner of Azad Hind Kisan Mahasangh for the past several days.
