In a grim reflection of the skewed sex ratio and deep-rooted patriarchal mindset in the Millennium City, another baby girl was found abandoned in a dustbin in Dundahera village on Wednesday.

This is the second such case in less than a week.

The five-day-old baby is reportedly suffering from jaundice and has been admitted at the Civil Hospital. A premature baby, the girl weighs around 1.2 kg and was found around 9.30am near Udyog Vihar by Dev Prakash, a resident of Dundahera.

Prakash was on his way to work when he heard a howling sound coming from a dustbin. He opened the bin and found the girl. He informed the police and an FIR was registered.

Dr Umesh Mehta, who is attending to the baby, said, “As the child is one-and-a-half months premature and underweight, she need more care.” Doctors say that last week a patient at the hospital delivered a premature baby of nearly the same weight.

The mother was suffering from depression.

Though the doctors wanted to keep the baby in hospital under observation, she was not willing to stay and left the hospital with the child without the doctor’s consent. Police and hospital authorities suspect the abandoned girl could be the same child.

On April 12, a 45-day-old girl child was found underneath a tree in the Civil Hospital premises. Last year, five such cases were reported.

“It is a serious issue. We are planning to present a document to the women and child welfare ministry. The need of the hour is to start sensitising children about gender issues so that the next generation has a changed mindset,” said National Commission For Women member Charu Walikhanna.

According to Census 2011, the sex ratio in Gurgaon is 853 females per 1,000 males as against 877 females per 1,000 males in Haryana.
