About 40% of the 180 streetlights maintained by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) in Sector 14 are not in order.

High-mast streetlights seen at road junctions, T-points and near temples or markets seem to have been permanently switched off due to absence of cranes to carry out repair work.

Residents say poorly-lit stretches are an invitation to criminals and prone to accidents. KS Yadav, president of the Sector 14 residents’ welfare association (RWA) had even filed an RTI apart from several complaints but the Huda has failed to take any action.

“The contractor’s staff had taken the complaint register to make copies but never returned it,” he added.

The Huda has a separate electrical division and the tender to maintain streetlights was awarded to contractor Jagjit Sethi.

But residents say Sethi has appointed another person to operate the lights and they are not happy about it. “Streetlights that are in working order can be seen switched on in the day time too,” a resident said.

The civic body, however, blamed the monsoon for the ‘malfunctions’. “Streetlights are not working due to rains and some technical glitches in some pockets of Sector 14. All other streetlights are in order,” said Arun Dhankhar, executive engineer, Huda.

Interestingly, the civic body has planned to install three more high-mast streetlights near a park and in the market in Gurgaon.
