Taking cue from Delhi, cops turn heat on rogues

In the wake of concerns raised over poor policing, the Gurgaon police launched a special drive on Saturday to crackdown on hooligans on MG Road. The Mall Mile has become a hub of anti-social activities after sundown.

Seven men, aged between 20 and 30 years, were held for creating public nuisance under the influence of alcohol. The accused were released on bail and a warning was issued by the judge.

The police also rounded up nine others. They were found drinking inside a car and creating nuisance outside the mall.

"The arrested men were found passing lewd comments at women. We have arrested them under Section 160 (punishment for committing affray), 294 (obscene acts and songs in public) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code," inspector Jagdish Prasad said.

The men arrested included residents of Delhi, UP and Najafgarh. Most of them had flocked to Gurgaon after clubs in Delhi were closed.

DCP (east) Maheshwar Dayal, along with the DLF City Phase 2 SHO, Inspector Jagdish Prasad, and Sector 29 SHO, inspector Hardeep Hooda, patrolled the area on Saturday night.

In a bid to improve its image, the Gurgaon police also forced several bars and discotheques to close by the deadline of 1am.
