Violence erupted in Assam’s Karbi Anglong hills district on Wednesday as supporters of separate state for ‘Karbi tribal’ involved in clashes with police and CRPF at the district’s head quarter, Diphu.
Several organization of Karbi tribal have demanded creation of a separate state for Karbi tribal in present Karbi Anglong hills district on the line of Telangana.
Police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to control a mob which carried out violent protest in Diphu town in support of creation of separate state by bifurcating Karbi Anglong hills district from Assam. Karbi tribal are majority population in the hills district.
“To control the mob and disperse them , police resorted to blank fire. In the police and agitators clash, several persons were injured. Curfew have been imposed in the Diphu town after the violence”, said BB Chetri, SP of Karbi Anglong hills district.
12 people sustained bullet injuries and eight others received minor injuries. All the injured were admitted at the Diphu civil hospital. One youth succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. He was identified as Rahul Singar.
Police said that in support of a separate Karbi state, supporters of nine organizations had carried out a procession in the Diphu town but suddenly the supporters of these organizations started throwing stones to residence of Congress MP Biren Singh Ingti and Congress MLA Bidya Sing Engleng in the town.
The secretariat of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council was vandalized by supporters of separate Karbi state.
The mob also set ablaze vehicles of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council’s CEM (chief executive magistrate) Joyram Engleng and executive member Tuliram Ronghang.
The Karbi Student Union ( KSU) has given ultimatum to Congress MP from Diphu constituency to raise the issue of separate Karbi state in the coming monsoon session in Parliament and if he fails to do so , then from August mid, they would intensify their movement for creation of separate state.
In 50s and 60s, there were movements for creation of separate states in Assam’s hills districts of Karbi Anglong. Since then from time to time, several organizations of Karbi tribal demanded for creation of a separate Karbi state.
