Sidelining problems like absence of a consistent water supply system, public toilets or a single bus Q-shelter, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is set to spend Rs. 5.12 lakh in renovating the official residence of the MCG commissioner at Civil Lines.

Amid the growing resentment among residents regarding the role of the civic body, a letter addressed to one of the two MCG joint commissioners mentions that the facelift for the commissioner’s official residence will cost R5.12 lakh. It is learnt that this renovation happens every time a new commissioner takes over the city’s top civic post and it is not as if the official residence needs a facelift.

Rajesh Khullar, the first MCG commissioner to have shifted to the Civil Line residence, got it renovated followed by Sudhir Rajpal, Vijay Singh Dahiya and now the present commissioner, Ashok Sangwan.

According to sources, the MCG has spent more than R15 to R20 lakh (including R5.12) on renovation of the commissioner’s official residence in the past three years.

The issue attains more significance at a time when the city residents have repeatedly condemned the MCG for not setting up public toilets in different parts of the city.

In the 2013-14 civic budget amounting to R800 crore, the MCG had not specified any amount for setting up public toilets. “We have a plan to construct over hundreds of public toilets in the city,” Ashok Sangwan had told Hindustan Times on April 22.
