The Yamunanagar police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man on the charges of stalking a minor, who had set herself ablaze in Karnal on Monday.

Investigating officer (IO) Negraj Singh said the 16-year-old minor had alleged that Tayed Khan had been harassing and passing lewd remarks on her for the past sometime.

Khan, a resident of Bhood Kalan in Yamunanagar, was arrested from a nearby village in the district.

Singh said: “We neither received a complaint from the girl nor from her parents against the harassment. It seems that the girl had tried to commit suicide after being unable to face the repeated alleged humiliation.

The matter was brought to our knowledge only after she had set herself on fire on Monday evening and we arrested the accused within 24 hours.”

The victim, a Class-11 student and a resident of Bhood Kalan village in Yamunanagar district of Haryana, sustained 90% burns and was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, in a critical condition.
