The municipal corporation squad demolished an illegal structure being built on the government land in MC colony on Wednesday. According to the sources, following wide spread protests, the government had ordered a probe into the illegal allotment of the MC's land to a private person, and deputy commissioner KM Pandurang had ordered the demolition on August 13.
Notably, the plot has been allotted to Congress leader and former zila parishad chairman Bharam Pal Rana. Rana was also present on the spot when the squad led by secretary SK Yadav demolished the building with a JCB machine.
Rana, who is a member of the state's fourth finance commission, did not resist and said that he himself was removing the structure, in compliance with government orders.
Earlier, in June, the matter was taken up by Bhartiya Janta Party MLA Anil Vij who held a massive protest and handed over the memorandum to the then deputy commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi. He had also sent representations to the government and alleged that the 1,100-square yard prime land was allotted to the Congress leader on lease, at the nominal sum of Rs 2 per sq feet on his wife's name, and was raising the construction without getting the site plan sanctioned.
Vij had also demanded action against the officers who had collided with him.
According to a source, Deputy commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi issued notice following which the construction was stopped and the building was sealed, and two MC employees were also suspended for the careless allotment and an inquiry was also ordered.
Interestingly, the construction resumed after Vidyarthi's transfer in July. But last month, BJYM leaders held a demonstration at MC office. Vij also threatened to raise the issue in the state assembly.
Reacting to the operation on Wednesday, Vij said that he was not satisfied with mere pulling down. The matter should be thoroughly investigated that how the land was given at Rs 2 per square feet when the market price in the area was above Rs 1 lakh per sq yard, he added.
He demanded that the lease should be cancelled forthwith and the officers involved in the scam should be punished.
