Kurukshetra parliamentarian Naveen Jindal on Thursday demanded a special economic package of Rs. 100 crore for the district, as has been done in case of cities of tourist and pilgrimage importance.

The industrialist-turned politician, who participated in a discussion on the union budget in Parliament on Thursday, said Kurukshetra be included in a list of cities under the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The mission aims to encourage reforms and fast track planned development of identified cities, focussing on efficiency in urban infrastructure and service delivery mechanism, community participation, and accountability of urban local bodies towards citizens.

He said no cut had been made on the social sector spending and expenditure increased. "The union finance minister has allocated Rs. 65,000 crore for farmers using chemical fertilizers and a similar assistance should be extended to farmers using organic fertilizers," Jindal said.

He said the direct cash transfer scheme would help remove the lacunae in the public distribution system. The parliamentarian, however, urged the FM that gas cylinder subsidy should be brought under direct benefit transfer scheme in all districts.
