Memorials to 10 political leaders built on eight sites in New Delhi take up a humungous 221.5 acres. PP Kapoor, a Panipat-based activist who obtained the details under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, argues the space is enough for over 80,000 housing plots for the 'aam aadmi' struggling to find shelter in the national capital.

Information provided by the central public works department (CPWD) - provided last week on an RTI plea filed way back in June 2010 - gets further perspective by the fact that the union government paid Rs. 1.53 crore in 2009-10 to the central industrial security force (CISF) and Rs. 34.65 lakh to others deployed to look after these memorials.

The memorials range from Rajghat for Mahatma Gandhi, the samadhi of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri and his wife Lalita, to one for Haryana leader Devi Lal.
