For the past three years, residents of Sector 23 have been denied adequate water supply.
Despite repeated appeals, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) has failed to replace old pipelines in the area.
The sector was developed by Huda in 1985-86 and the PVC pipelines
laid then were of inferior quality compared to the cast iron pipes that are used now.
“Gallons of water go waste as these pipes burst frequently due to the high pressure of supply. I have seen pipelines go bust on more than seven occasions,” said Malkhan Singh, a resident.
According to residents, the issue of pipeline replacement was first taken up in 2008 with the then Huda administrator Deepti Umashankar.
The PVC pipes, according to residents, are not able to sustain the high pressure of water released from overhead tank. Hence, they often burst.
In late 2009, residents said, Huda had also initiated work and awarded a tender.
“The pipelines were replaced but in a selective way,” said Rao Madan Lal, another resident, adding that the then executive engineer AK Gulati had informed them that a proposal was being prepared.
“It has been two years now and there has been no sign of progress at any level,” he added.
However, executive engineer AK Maggu said, “I am not aware of any such proposal. However, I will take care of the problem and do the needful.” Residents will now approach Huda administrator Praveen Kumar.
