A 31-year-old woman has been brutally beaten up in the city’s Police Lines area -- a stone’s throw from the office of the superintendent of police – while trying to protect her 16-year-old niece from molestation.

At least 30 people witnessed the assault, but no one came to her aid.

On Saturday evening, the woman was out for a walk with her two nieces, when they were accosted by some motorcycle-borne youths.

“They began passing lewd comments and one of them grabbed my younger niece,” said the woman. When she protested, the youth started slapping her.

“I snatched the keys of the motorcycle,” she said. At this, he started kicking her repeatedly in the stomach.

“I fell on the road, and tried to shoo him away with a brick, but he snatched it and kicked me again in the stomach. My nieces started crying but none of the people present intervened,” she said.

When the youths finally left, the women approached the police.

A complaint was lodged and later, she was admitted to the civil hospital.

“The victim sustained injuries in the lower abdomen. Her condition is stable now,” said civil surgeon Ashok Chaudhury.

“We have filed a case and hope to round up the youths by tonight,” said superintendent of police BS Balan.
