In compliance with the Punjab and Haryana high court orders, the Rohtak deputy commissioner (DC) on Saturday directed the excise and taxation department to remove advertisement hoardings of liquor shops from the national highway-10 within a week.

Forming a committee under subdivisional magistrate (SDM) Jagdish Sharma, DC Amit Aggarwal said the committee would ensure that the work was done without any delay in accordance with the court orders.

He said as per the court orders, the liquor shops established on the encroached (government) land or those operating without seeking permission from the government would be removed from all national highways in the state.

Notably, the court orders said that presence of liquor advertisements not only distracted motorists on highways, but also turned fatal at times.

The administration has also asked its officials to ensure that all liquor advertisements displayed from the district be removed.

SDM Jagdish Sharma said as per the court orders, a survey would be conducted in the first phase and advertisements of liquor shops would be removed. After completion of the survey, a report on the total count of liquor shops on the national highway would be submitted to the deputy commissioner for due action against offenders.

Talking to HT, Aggarwal said: “As per the court orders, any kind of liquor advertisement is illegal on the highway and the order of dislocation of liquor shops would be applicable on those who have either opened liquor vends on government land illegally or are operating without permission.”
