Residents of the Millennium City have a new name for Gurgaon — unplanned urban slum. It seems Palam Vihar is the worst affected area if one goes by what its residents have to say. According to them, Sectors 22 and 23 have bad roads, low availability of water and irregular power supply and no efforts have been given to improve these.

However, residents hope the new elected representatives would bring some relief. "The elected persons should take care of the areas properly. They must keep us happy and keep tabs on errant contractors," said Neelam Shorey, resident, Sector 22.

“The roads have not been repaired for many months. In addition to this, there is hygiene problem and a large number of street dogs pose a risk to our children,” said OP Gulati, general secretary, Palam Vihar RWA.

At least there are 20 stray dogs and some pigs on every lane in the colony. Residents say the sewers at the area do not have an outlet and overflow often. Some residents, who had left behind premium properties in south Delhi and shifted to Gurgaon, have lost of hopes of getting better facilities. The grass, they realised, is not always greener on the other side.

“The administration has a lazy attitude. Our locality has major security risks from criminals living in surrounding unauthorised villages. We need strong boundary walls,” said Major General Satbir Singh, resident, Sector 23. Some internal roads in the colony are not connected with one another. Besides, there is no proper sewage network.
