"Iss chhori nay hamari izzat ko batta laga diya hai, isko markar hi ghar lana (This girl has disgraced our family, bring home only her dead body)," said the mother of the Rohtak girl who was murdered in cold blood on Wednesday.
Nidhi Barak loved and wanted to marry Dharmender Barak who was from the same sub-caste and village, which is forbidden in Haryana's Jat community.
Two days after the couple was murdered by the girl's family, her grandfather Anand Barak told police how the girl's mother, Rita, invoked family honour to goad her husband, son and brother-in-law into murdering the couple. And while the men murdered the couple, she watched.
All four are behind bars now, along with Mahesh Kumar, the driver of the car in which the couple was forcibly brought home. Another accused Rajesh, also a relative of the girl, is yet to be arrested. Police said he would be caught soon.

Dharmender's elder brother Pawan and his uncle Satbir too recorded their statements before the police along with Anand and one Rameshwar, a relative of Nidhi.
Pawan told police he was at his farm when a villager told him that his brother had been murdered by Narender alias Billu (the girl's father). Pawan said Dharmender and Nidhi loved each other, but the girl's parents did not approve the relationship and had threatened Dharmender earlier.
Police said family members' statements would help them build a water-tight case against the accused.
In a similar case of 2011, the Supreme Court mandated death penalty for 'honour killers'.
Meanwhile, taking suo motu note of the incident, the Haryana Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Rohtak SP by October 7.
Also, the National Commission for Women said its team would visit the village soon.
