Haryana vigilance bureau officials arrested a superintendent engineer (SE) from Yamunanagar district while accepting a bribe of Rs. 1.72 lakh on Thursday.
The suspect, Sandeep Garg, worked with the state irrigation department and was caught from his office.
According to complainant Balak Ram, a contractor, Garg, had refused to clear his pending bills and demanded a bribe at the rate of 2.25% of the total work assigned to his firm.
Ram was working on two irrigation projects at Tajewala to the tune of Rs. 6.22 crore.
He alleged that Garg was not releasing a no-objection certificate (NoC) since November even as the work was complete. Ram said the arrested official had vehemently refused to clear bills till he was given a bribe.
"Harassed at the hands of the SE, I finally approached the inspector general of police of the state vigilance bureau (SVB) and lodge a complaint. Acting promptly, a team was constituted and finally he was arrested on Thursday," Ram said.
According to the SVB inspector Rajesh Kumar, the team had recorded a detailed conservation between the suspect and the complainant on mobile phone.
Sources said Garg would be produced in the court on Friday.
