6 policemen injured in mob violence; 2 vehicles torched in Solan

Protesting over the death of a youth allegedly due to police harassment, an angry mob torched two police vehicles and indulged in heavy stone-pelting, leaving six policemen injured in Solan district on Monday.


The violence took place at Baddi area of the district, about 125 kms from in Shimla, police said.

Suchha Singh, a worker of Bold Communication Ltd at Jharmajri and hailing from Kalka climbed an electric pole to electrocute himself by high tension wires.

The youth belonged to Gujjar community and a large number of community members reached Baddi from Kalka and staged angry demonstration and indulged in violence, ADGP (Law and order), SR Mardi said.

The community members alleged that Singh was being tortured and harassed by the police for past few weeks and he took the extreme step to get rid of this situation.

Singh was referred to PGI Chandigarh after he tried to electrocute himself and succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.

The members of Gujjar community came to Baddi with his body and refused to cremate it till action was taken against the erring policemen.

As soon as two vehicles - a van and a utility jeep - carrying police personnel reached the spot, the mob set the vehicles on fire.

The agitated mob then marched towards the office of SP, Baddi and pelted stones, following which the police had to resort to mild cane-charge.

Six policemen were injured in stone-pelting and rushed to the hospital.

The mob dispersed only after the police registered an FIR under section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide) against the accused police personnel.
