After a bright clear sunny sky for more than a week hovering clouds on Wednesday have again raised hopes of snow for the locals and tourist alike.
The capital town of Shimla is witnessing a good crowd this tourist season with most of the hotels going houseful.
While snowfall had eluded this Christmas to like the previous years, however the hopes of White New Year is still a wishful thought for most of the locals and tourist.
Metrological Department, Shimla, director, Manmohan Singh said that the approaching fresh western Disturbances on December 27 and 28 will bring snow in the high hills while rain in the mid and lower hills.
While it is early to forecast snow on the eve of New Year however if the WD persists than the chances would be there of snow he added.
He disclosed that the temperatures have slightly witnessed a rise, 2 to 3 degrees above normal.
The department, he said continues to receive queries of snowfall from various places especially the tourists inquiring about the weather pattern close to New Year.
"We have been receiving most of the calls from the people down South," he said.
Shimla had in the year 2002 and 2010 witnessed white New Year's Eve in the past 10 years.
Weather forecast of Met Department providing the synoptic features reveal that a feeble Western Disturbance (W.D) as an upper air system over north Pakistan and neighborhood over Jammu and Kashmir and neighborhood has passed away eastward.
A fresh Western Disturbance (W.D) as an upper air system would affect the state from December 27 onwards.
Sahail Gupta tourist from Delhi who is a frequent visitor to Shimla said last year we could not be lucky enough to see the snow the presence of clouds has raised our hopes of snow this time.
The tourist arrival has been good this winter season as compared to last year said Shimla Hoteliers and Restaurant Association President, Harnam Singh Kukreja.
He said, "Tourists wanting to see snowfall have been calling up to know the likelihood of snow and the weather pattern. With hopes of snow by the end of the month the influx of tourist would pick up more by the New Year."
The maximum temperature recorded in Shimla on Wednesday was 15.7 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature stood at 5.3 degree Celsius.
