Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister and Rajya Sabha member Shanta Kumar on Saturday donated Rs. 26 lakh for the victims of flood-hit state of Uttarakhand.
He has donated Rs. 1 lakh from his personal account and Rs. 25 lakh from the MP fund.
He has also written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing solidarity with the flood victims of Uttarakhand and the central government.
He blamed the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources in the hill state for the tragedy. “It is man's increasing greed and trivialness of our politicians and the administration which is responsible for such tragedies,” said Shanta, quoting Mahatma Gandhi: “Nature has enough for man's need but not for his greed.”
He said this indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources might result in more such tragedies.
Kumar also stated increasing population as one of the reasons behind such disasters. He also appealed people to contribute in helping flood victims.
