Students, faculty and non-teaching staff of Pandit Anant Ram SD College, Baba Badoh, in Kangra district held a protest at the deputy commissioner's (DC) office here on Wednesday, demanding the state government to take over the college.
Earlier, the agitating students took out a “Changar Nayay Yatra” rally from the DC office to Government College, Dharamsala, where activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidarthi Parishad joined the procession, which culminated at Kachehri Adda. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through additional district magistrate Rakesh Sharma demanding the government to save the institution and future of students studying in the college.
The copies of the memorandum were also sent to the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh high court and technical education minister GS Bali, who is also the member of the college executive committee, demanding an expeditious action on taking over the college in larger interest of area, employees and students.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Aman Walia of the college alleged that the Changar Samaj Siksha Kalayan Parishad, which runs the college, betrayed the innocent people of Changar area and the attempt to shut down the college has not gone well with the people.
Concerned about the fate of the college, Dr Walia said how the parishad could take such an arbitrary decision when the money and land for the construction of the building and managing routine affairs were being provided by the general public.
He requested the state government to revoke the no objection certificate (NOC) obtained by the parishad for closure of the college by misrepresenting the facts and initiate a high-level enquiry by a sitting judge of the HP high court.
