Modi opened his 50-minute address to thousands gathered at Lal Bahadur Stadium by speaking in Telugu for about five minutes.

“We have Telugu-medium schools in Gujarat,” said Modi, emphasising cordial relations between Gujaratis and Telugus.

Modi pointed out that his birthday fell on the same day Telangana region was freed from the erstwhile Nizam’s rule after Sardar Patel’s intervention in 1948.

“You celebrate September 17 as Hyderabad liberation day. I'm fortunate as that day is my birthday too.”

Modi ended his speech with the slogan used by the Barack Obama presidential campaign – “Yes, we can!”

As the crowd cheered and echoed the BJP strongman, he added, “Yes, we will do!”

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh didn't take Modi's speech too well calling him a 'fake desi Obama' and 'feku'.
