A young man was found murdered near his home in Shopian district on Tuesday. Angry locals stormed and torched house of the slain youth's neighbour suspecting his hand in the murder.

Police said 28-year-old Bilal Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Zainapora village, some 15 km from Shopian town, was found strangulated in an orchard some metres away from his home.
"He had gone missing after late night prayers and in the morning his dead body was found with injuries," said station house officer of Shopian police station, Irshad Ahmad.

"We are yet to ascertain who or why the youth was killed. But there is a suspicion on his neighbour which will be investigated," he said adding no arrests were made as yet.
Bhat, with degrees like masters in commerce and bachelors in education, had left his contractual lecturer post in a local higher secondary to manage his vast stretch of fruit orchards.

After police recovered the body of Bhat, a mob comprising many locals of the village stormed into the house of his neighbour and torched the building. A pachayat ghar adjacent to the building was also partially destroyed.

"Bhat's family is very affluent and his neighbours used to work as labourers in former's home and agricultural land. Before he went missing, he was called by his neighbour for some work. There is suspicion that Bhat was murdered over money issues," said a local not wishing to be identified. The Shopian SHO said those involved in the arson will also be booked.

Family of the deceased did not clearly blame anyone. "I don't know what happened. Somebody killed him by strangulation," Bhat's cousin, Altaf Ahmad said refusing to reveal anything further.
