“I have no relations with Mr Modi and I do not want comment on any issue related to him,” she told HT.

Raje was reacting to Rajasth-an Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s allegations that she had allowed Modi to behave like “the de facto chief minister” during her 2003-08 regime.

Earlier on Friday, Sandip Bhatra, a local NGO head, filed a case of fraud against Modi, his wife and eight others. Bhatra alleged Modi and his associates set up a bogus company and using forged documents, acquired havelis (old mansions) at Amer, on the outskirts of Jaipur, from an indulgent government at throwaway prices.

“He terrorised government servants, and even dared to misbehave with IAS officials and public representatives. In fact, he used to summon bureaucrats with files to meet him, and issue orders directly to them,” Gehlot alleged.

The Congress had targeted Raje in the run-up to the 2008 assembly elections by focusing on Modi's alleged wrongdoings. “We raked up the Modi issue in the election campaign as Raje could not check him,” he said.

“The government changed the Rajasthan Sports Act just to ensure his election to the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA).

“The new act gave the state's district units voting powers they did not have earlier.

“This allowed Modi to get in from the Nagaur District Cricket Association, but even this got embroiled in a controversy. Outsiders could not become members of the district associations.

But Modi got around this by claiming he had purchased land in the district under the name of Lalit Kumar.

“Lalit Modi became Lalit Kumar. This smacked of conspiracy and illegality but no one in the state government dared to challenge this,” Gehlot alleged.

Raje was quick to refute these allegations.

“The chief minister has been leveling baseless allegations against me for the past 17 months but nothing has been proved so far.

“He is free to hold an enquiry by any agency. I challenge him to prove these charges,” she said.
