Putting the onus for improvement of bilateral ties on Pakistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said his government was continuously reviewing ties with Islamabad after the January 8 incident along the LoC.

The "inhuman killing" could affect Indo-Pak ties, he said.

"Our future action will be based on carefully thought out strategy," Singh said at the AICC session in Jaipur. However, along with the tough message to Pakistan - which was greeted with applause from 1,200-odd Congress delegates - Singh also asked Pakistan to reciprocate India's efforts at friendship.

Picking up from where Singh left, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid emphasised on the need for the atmosphere to improve. "We did hit a low point a few days ago, and I think it is important that we get back to a level of atmospherics that can be described as near normal... and then we can think of moving forward in a meaningful way, he told Karan Thapar on CNN IBN's Devil's Advocate programme.

Khurshid said the recent talks between the directors-general of military operations (DGMOs) of both countries was a "positive signal".
