A kidnapping and rape accused allegedly committed suicide in a police station in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district prompting police to suspend the station house officer (SHO).

Vinod, 28, accused of kidnapping and rape by a girl recently, had been arrested on Tuesday. “He was in the lockup in Kotwali police station where he hanged himself,” said additional SP Bharatpur Satyendra Singh.

While the police claimed Vinod committed suicide by hanging himself from a water tap with a sheet, his family alleged he was murdered.

According to sources, the deceased was of average height while the tap was at a height of 30 inches from the floor.

This is the second custodial death in the district in the last two months.

“SHO Hira Lal was suspended and other staffers were shunted to police lines late last night,” Singh said, adding that the postmortem of the body has been conducted.

A judicial enquiry has been ordered into the incident.
