Former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, currently in jail in connection with the Rs 4,000- crore mining and money laundering scam, has landed in a fresh controversy.
Madhu Koda is accused of keeping regular contact with his business partners through cell phones and Skype.
He is accused of keeping regular contact with his friends, especially business partners and investors, settled across various places in India and countries like Dubai, Indonesia and Thailand, through cell phones and Skype. However, Koda’s wife and lawyer vehemently denied the charge.
Senior BJP leader and author of the book “Madhu Koda Loot Raj”, Saryu Roy, told HT he had drawn attention of the administrative authorities in Ranchi towards blatant violation of the jail norms by Koda and his team lodged in the Birsa Munda Central Jail at Hotwar.
“They have all the communication gadgets behind the bars and are keeping constant touch with people who helped them in laundering the mining scam money out of India,” Roy said.
After a news channel tracked Koda aide and an accused in the money laundering scam, Anil Bastawade, at a Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, Ranchi police on Thursday carried out a surprise raid in the Birsa Munda jail.
The raid yielded a cell phone, a SIM, a few mobile chargers from one of the cells, which housed criminals, but no politicians. Bastawade has a red corner notice against him.
“We have concrete information that there are many more cell phones inside the jail,” Saket Kumar Singh, senior superintendent of police, Ranchi, said after the four-hour raid.
“But given the huge size of the jail, it is difficult to scan its nook and cranny. We also do not hold the jail management completely responsible for the entry of communication gadgets inside the jail.”
Singh said he didn’t have exact information about the former CM and his aides possessing cell phones and gadgets facilitating chatting through Skype inside the jail. “This is news to me,” jail superintendent D K Pradhan said, adding, he would “carry out his own probe into the allegation.”
“It’s a baseless allegation,” Madhu Koda’s wife Geeta Koda reacted.
Sources close to inmates inside the jail have disclosed that Koda and other politicians cooling heels behind the bars have all the comforts they long for, but they come for a price. Journalists have, on several occasions, seen Enos Ekka, another former minister in jail in connection with disproportionate assets case, flaunting costly sun glasses and cell phones while travelling to the court for hearing.
