Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) on Friday exchanged fire with a 15-member strong group of naxalites at Venkigudda near in Chikmagalur, but there were no casualties on either side, a top police official said.

Western Range IGP, Gopal Hosur told PTI here that the ANF team was engaged in combing operations in the area following information about movement of a naxal gang.

On seeing police, the gang opened fire, which the ANF men returned and the exchange of fire that began at 1330 hours lasted for an hour, he said.

"No bodies have been found so far. These are only rumours", Hosur said.

However, unconfirmed reports said two bodies were removed from the spot.

Bullets and grenades have been recovered from the spot as the naxals managed to escape.

Two days ago a gang of naxalites had visited the house of a villager in the area and demanded his double-barrel gun but he refused.

Police said the gang visited him again on Thursday and following this, ANF had launched combing operations.
