Sukhen Dey, an auto driver of Belgharia to Birati route, was arrested after he beat up a passenger at Belgharia.
Friday’s incident once again highlighted the plight of passengers. According to sources, the problem started when the passenger Shankar Roy (32) could not give the exact fare, which is Rs. 6, to the auto driver after disembarking at Belgharia.
The passenger handed Rs. 50 to the auto driver. At this the auto driver told the passenger that he would take Rs. 10 and not Rs. 6 since he could not give any change. The passenger protested saying he would not pay Rs. 10. This led to a heated discussion and the auto driver beat up the passenger. Soon other auto drivers joined in.
Shankar Roy was seriously injured and admitted to hospital. Later Roy along with his mother lodged a complaint at Belgharia police station. Police arrested the auto driver later.
The driver, Sukhen Dey, will be produced in court on Saturday, police sources said. “I was under the impression that I had Rs. 6 with me when I got into the auto. But I did not realise that I had spent that money and I was left with only a Rs. 50 note in my pocket,” said Roy, who is a resident of Dum Dum.
In October 2012 an elderly person and his son were roughed up by a driver following an altercation over Rs. 6. Barun Shantra was reportedly left with a broken bone after the driver punched him in the nose. The incident took place on Sodepur–Madhyamgram route. In November 2012, an auto driver thrashed a passenger in Garia after an altercation.
