Police said Sayan Biswas probably attempted self-immolation.

Sayan's father too was injured while trying to save his son during the fire incident on Sunday, police said.

Sayan was admitted to a private hospital in the city and passed away on Wednesday afternoon, state housing minister Arup Biswas told IANS.

Police said the young Sayan might have attempted suicide by setting himself on fire at his house in Krishnagar in Nadia district on Sunday morning.

With 80% burns, Sayan was rushed to Shaktinagar district hospital in Krishnagar but was shifted to Apollo Gleneagles Hospital in Kolkata after his condition deteriorated.

Sayan, a student of an engineering college in Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas, had returned home some days before the incident.
