The Birbhum district administration on Tuesday lodged a complaint against Trinamool Congress district president Anubrata Mondal for using provocative speeches during election campaigns.

Following State Election Commission’s directive, Birbhum district administration finally took the step against the district president of the ruling party.

However, when asked, both Birbhum DM and the police refused to comment on the issue.

No section under IPC has yet been slapped on Anubrata.

The district police administration is, however, planning to tag 171(C) of IPC to the complaint which will make it a bailable offence.

While campaigning for panchayat elections, Trinamool Congress district president Anubrata Mondal had made headlines by making controversial statements. He had asked his party workers not to allow CPM and Congress candidates to file nominations for the rural polls.

Sources said that following this statement, the election commission had, reportedly, asked the district administration to take strong action against Anubrata. But nothing was done.

Again on June 12, the State Election Commission directed Birbhum DM to lodge a case against TMC district president under section 171(C) of IPC, which was also not executed.

On July 17, in presence of agriculture minister Malay Ghatak and fisheries minister Chandranath Singha, Anubrata Mondal again made another provocative statement.

He said: “Kononirdol prarthi ke vote deben na. Jodi kono nirdol prarthi humki day, tahole tar bari guriye din, puriye din… R kono prosason jodi nirdol prarthider sahajjo kore tobe sei police ke bomb marun, ami bolchi bombmarte… (Don’tvote for any independent candidate. If any such candidate threatens
you, demolish his house and set it on fire… And if the administration helps the independent candidates, hurl bombs at the cops. I’m asking you to do so).”

He had been a habitual offender in making controversial statements. On July 11 at Sontsole at Md. Bazaar area, Anubrata had described Congress as bhikharir bacha…oder kono jatnei (Congress people are paupers. They have no character).” The remark drew the ire of the opposition forces, which lost no time to slam his abusive rant.

When HT asked lawyers about the section under which police are planning to book Anubrata, they said that a person is booked under 171(C) IPC when he tries to influence elections.

According to rulebook, “Whoever voluntarily interferes or attempts to interfere with the free exercise of any electoral right commits the offence of undue influence at an election.”

In the meantime, Trinamool Congress district leadership has also started taking legal advice. Anubrata is expected to arrive at Bolpur court to seek bail and it has also been confirmed by sources that no lawyer will oppose his application.
