Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has addressed two rallies in Burdwan district, one at Galsi and another at Ukhra. In reply, the CPI(M) and the district Left Front unit also held a rally in Burdwan with Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee leading from the front.

Addressing the rally at Utsav Maidan, the ex-chief minister said that with only 10 days left for holding the first phase of panchayat elections, the entire state was living in uncertainty.

Nobody knows whether the election will take place in scheduled time or not, he said. Bhattacharjee launched an attack on the present state government and Mamata over the law and order situation.

From the beginning, the state government was not paying heed to the Election Commission’s suggestions, Bhattacharjee alleged. Near about 1,000 candidates could not submit their nomination to gram panchayat and also 150 at panchayat samities in Burdwan district, he said. Since the election has been announced, a gang of bikers is ruling the streets and spreading terror. Who are they and from where are they getting money, he asked.

Bhattacharjee added, “We still believe that though these attacks are taking place, the election is necessary for the functioning of panchayats.” Buddha addressed the rally at Burdwan for 25 minutes.
