The CPI(M) on Thursday issued a whip to all party leaders to prevent Trinamool Congress from wresting the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad (SMP).

Jibesh Sarkar, CPI(M) district secretary in Darjeeling, said, “The party has issued a whip to all four members in the SMP not to attend October 7 meeting.”
The meeting has been convened to facilitate voting noconfidence motion brought by the Trinamool.

The Darjeeling district has no zilla parishad and the mahakuma parishad functions as the topmost tier of panchayat administration. The parishad is set to go to polls in mid-2014.

The CPI(M) currently holds the reins of the SMP with four members.

The remaining three members of the Congress moved to Trinamool on Se ptember 18. Shor tly after joining the Trinamool, the rebel Congress members wrote to the divisional commissioner, Jalpaiguri, voicing no-confidence on the current CPI(M)-run board.

In response to the letter, the Jalpaiguri divisional commissioner has convened a meeting on October 7, during which the Trinamool hopes to defeat the CPI(M) in voting on the noconfidence motion.

Senior CPI(M) leader and former urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya saw the October 7 meeting as a conspiracy by the Trinamool to take the rural board.
Accusing the Trinamool of resorting to unethical means to seize control of the SMP, Sarkar said, “We have asked all four CPI(M) members to abstain from the meeting on October 7.”
