Ever heard of nearly 600 cases being slapped against an individual ?

If that sounds absurd to you, well, it just may be a world record.

Saradha Group chairman Sudipta Sen faces 572 cases — something Bengal’s senior police officers describe as an “unsurpassed feat”.

A source from the special investigation team (SIT) probing the Saradha chit fund scam told HT, the maximum number of cases have been recorded in South Dinajpur, where more than 170 FIRs were lodged.

Jalpaiguri is the next highest, with more than 100 cases.

“It’s a fact that 572 FIRs have been lodged against Sen, but we’ll count only those cases which are under trial and the number of these cases are 54 to 55,” Samir Das, Sudipta Sen’s lawyer, said.

Interestingly, Debjani Mukherjee, executive director of the Saradha Group and reckoned as the ‘right-hand man’ of Sen in the Saradha empire, also faces an almost similar number of cases.

But the number was certainly less than what her boss has notched up, SIT officials said.

“I don’t remember the exact number. But Sen, indeed, faces a number that’s close to the tally you mention,” additional directorgeneral, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Sibaji Ghosh said.

“Toughs and goons often face multiple cases. But it doesn’t normally cross 25-30. More than 30 cases were slapped against PCAPA spokesman Chhatradhar Mahato. By any yardstick, 572 appears an unsurpassed feat,” the SIT official said.

“In my entire career, I’ve never heard of anybody facing so many cases,” Partho Bhattacherjee, former DGP, Armed Police said. Sudipta and Debjani were arrested in Kashmir in April 2013 by Bidhannagar City Police.

Getting sedatives and drugs in Bengal jails is child’s play

Obtaining sedatives in Bengal jails is child's play, jail insiders told HT on Friday, while the city wondered how a high profile prisoner lodged in a high-security cell in a central jail could procure dozens of sedatives to attempt suicide in a cell guarded by two sentries round the clock.
