Gyan’s illustrious career stretched back several decades, to the 1970s. He will, perhaps, be best remembered for his outstanding contribution as bassist and songwriter for city-based band Skinny Alley, which was formed in the late ‘90s. Also featuring Amyt Datta on guitar and Gyan’s wife, Jayashree Singh, on vocals, Skinny Alley soon rose to prominence as one of the leading musical acts in the country and, by 2003, had released their first album, Escape the Roar - the first completely English language album to be released by an Indian band on a major record label (EMI). The musical pioneer is survived by his wife, Jayashree, and son Jivraj Singh - a talented drummer in his own right.
