The two hung zilla parishads and over 200 gram panchayat and panchayat samities have put the Congress is a fix over the question of supporting or taking support from either CPI(M) or the Trinamool.

The state unit of the party is so confused over the stand to be taken that they are leaving the decision to central leadership.

“We’ll decide after discussing the situation with our central leadership,” Pradesh Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya told HT.

The decision is especially tough for the zilla parishads in Malda and North Dinajpur districts.

In Malda, Congress and the Left have won 16 seats each, while Trinamool won 6 seats.

None of CPI(M) and Congress can form the board without support from Trinamool.

In North Dinajpur, the Left has won 13 of the 26 seats, while Congress has won eight and Trinamool five.

Without support from Congress or Trinamool, Left’s tally is equal to that of the opposition.

It would make functioning of the zilla parishad almost impossible.

The Left, on the other hand, has made it clear that they would neither offer support to any of Trinamool or Congress nor would accept support from them.

“We won’t take support from or offer support to our political rivals,” CPI(M) state secretary and Left Front chairman Biman Bose said on Tuesday.

Congress’ decision of choosing between the CPI(M) and Trinamool becomes all the more tough because they are keen on retaining Malda zilla parishad but a large section of party leaders and workers in the state are strongly against joining hands with the Trinamool while joining hands with CPI(M) may turn out to be a hara-kiri.

“The decision is tough for Malda zilla parishad, as it is in a larger scale. But for panchayat samitis and gram panchayats, we may leave the decision on the local leadership,” a senior state Congress leader said.

He said that the party would most likely not take any central decision on the hung gram panchayats and panchayat samities, arguing that the equations vary from places to places. “The decision would be easier where independents are factors. It is easier to take their support than to take support from Trinamool or CPI(M),” the leader said.

Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, has decided to wait and watch the situation. “We’ll wait to see what moves the CPI(M) and Congress make. We’ll decide accordingly,” a Trinamool leader said. Congress leaders did not rule out trying to ‘get’ support from one or two members from Trinamool to form the Malda zilla parishad, though they are yet unsure of its success.
