The ties between the ruling alliance in West Bengal have hit a new low, with the Congress declaring it would continue its “constructive criticism” of big brother Trinamool Congress for the sake of good governance.

At a press conference in Kolkata’s Bidhan Bhawan on Sunday, Congress national spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Our criticism can always be constructive. It is intended to improve the quality of administrative decision making and governance.”

The relationship between the allies had deteriorated further — both at the Centre and the state — with Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee opposing critical Central policy decisions like FDI in retail and the Lokpal Bill.

In Bengal, the Congress workers hit the streets over farmers’ suicides, crib deaths and the renaming of Indira Bhawan.

In a recent interview, Banerjee had taken a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a state Congress minister had even resigned from the government in protest.

Singhvi said the party owes good governance to the people of Bengal, who elected the alliance.

“We have criticised it (farmers’ issues and crib deaths) as we wanted to improve the administrative functioning and governance,” he said. “Nobody should take it negatively, because it a constructive criticism.”

Singhvi dismissed chief minister Banerjee’s repeated claims that the central government is yet to “pay a single penny” to the debt-ridden Bengal.

“Over the last few months the Centre has given nearly Rs. 8,000 crore to this state,” he said.

“If there is any specific sector to which the CM wants to draw attention, the Centre is always ready to discuss it.”
