The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha after a central committee meeting in Darjeeling on Friday deputed 5 leaders to depart for the Delhi on February 24 to lobby in support of Gorkhaland. The GJM central committee along with the Gorkhaland Study Forum and representatives of frontal organisations met on Friday to chalk out a course of action.

Though not wanting to divulge any details of the meeting, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said 5 leaders would be meeting MPs of different states along with UPA leaders and leaders of the opposition parties seeking support for Gorkhaland.

The 5 GJM leaders heading for Delhi include chairman Darjeeling municipality Amar Singh Rai, GHM spokesperson Harka Bahadur Chettri, central committee member DK Pradhan, Bijay Pradhan and Binod Prakash Sharma both belonging to the frontal organisations of the GJM.

Party insiders said GJM president Bimal Gurung along with other senior leaders are expected to join the team in Delhi in the first week of March. Gurung is expected to call on President Pranab Mukherjee on March 6.

Sources said that Shankar Malakar, Darjeeling district Congress president is in Delhi trying to arrange for Gurung to meet senior Congress leaders and ministers. Malakar had travelled to the Hills on February 11 and held closeddoor talks with Gurung.

Political pundits see this as Congress’ attempt to woo Gurung and his men keeping the forthcoming panchayat polls in mind. Gurung’s recent fall out with the Trinamool Congress and chief minister Mamata Banerjee has emerged as an excellent opportunity for the Congress to cosy up to the GJM leader.

Gurung in turn is in search of strong political backing to counter the Mamata-might should the need arise.
