The accused councillor, Bithika Panja, who represents ward number 44 of HMC, allegedly demanded Rs. 5 lakh from the owner of the showroom of electronic goods. She and her cohorts allegedly damaged the showroom after being denied the amount. The owner lodged a complaint at the Shibpur police station but the police allegedly did not take any action against Panja.

“I am not present in the district and will enquire about it after I return,” said Arup Roy, the minister. “I am sick and now undergoing treatment at a private nursing home and can’t talk over phone,” Panja told HT.

“The matter is under investigation,” said a senior officer of the Howrah city police. A parking zone was to be set up before the showroom and work had already begun.
