Investigations into the murder of 40-year-old Chaitali Santra in Howrah have revealed that personal vendetta was the only possible motive behind the killing. Santra, a homemaker, was killed at her residence on the afternoon of September 26.

“A member of a human rights organisation, Santra was in on so many family problems between husband and wife. Since she was well connected with a section of police officers, she was able to influence them in connection with domestic violence cases,” said an officer at the Howrah police station.

According to the officer, a story of blackmail has allegedly surfaced over the course of the investigation. “We got allegations against Santra, saying she was blackmailing someone for a domestic problem and saying she would not proceed further if he gave a large amount of money. However, this is under investigation,” he added.

The police have ruled out any possibilities of there being an interstate criminal hand in this killing. “The person who sent her the parcel was very familiar with her, and she had prior information that she was going to get the parcel. We think it had been sent to her under the pretence of sending her a gift,” said the officer.

However, cops are still in the dark regarding the contradictory statements by Santra’s daughter and husband. “After the incident took place, Shatabdi, Chaitali’s daughter, told us that prior to the incident her mother had been receiving threatening calls on her mobile phone for the last few days.

However, her husband, Himangshu, rubbished these claims. Which of the two is right, is yet to be known,” said an officer at the Howrah city police detective department.

The criminal investigation department (CID) has joined hands with the Howrah city police in connection with this murder case.

“After one of her campaigns, a person in her locality was remanded in judicial custody for allegedly torturing his wife. Chaitali’s daughter has testified against him and we are verifying the allegation,” a CID sleuth told HT.
