In the backdrop of increasing violence in Left Front ruled West Bengal, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the killings and political clashes taking place in the state every day were "totally unacceptable".

"It is very unfortunate and totally unacceptable that every day there are killings and political clashes," Mukherjee told reporters on the sidelines of a programme at the Indian Institute of Management at Joka near here.

He said Union Home minister P Chidambaram was in touch with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee over the issue.

When pointed out that the chief minister was yet to go to Delhi despite Chidambaram requesting him to come to the national capital for talks, Mukherjee replied, "We are aware of it."

Mukherjee, who had yesterday expressed concern over the worsening law and order in the state, hoped that violence would stop and peace would return to the state.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had met him last night and briefed him on the situation at Netai village in Lalgarh where eight persons were gunned down on Friday allegedly by CPIM armed cadre.
