The health of chief minister Mamata Banerjee has given the doctors attending her cause for concern. The chief minister has a pulse rate of just 48 beats a minute, which her physician fears is indicative of cardiac ailments. She has been advised to take complete rest — even to stay away from phone calls and signing files.

Doctors say the normal pulse rate of a person should be around 72 to 80 beats per minute.

“We’re worried about her palpitation. The pulse rate is abnormally low and, so, we’ll conduct some cardiac and blood tests to ascertain the condition of her heart. We’ll keep her in hospital for the next few days,” general medicine expert Subrata Moitra and her long-time physician told HT on Thursday.

It was clear from Dr Moitra’s advice that the chief minister has been taking on more stress than she can, perhaps, handle. At various programmes, Mamata has claimed that she sleeps for hardly a few hours.

“She’s been given pain-killers and sedatives as a preliminary treatment. She was given intermittent oxygen support last night,” Moitra added.
