Junior minister of railways and Behrampore MP Adhir Chowdhury is planning to move court against Murshidabad SP Humayun Kabir for denying rapes in his area. Chowdhury also told the women of Kharjuna not to go to the police if they find any rapist in their area. He said, “Punish the criminals yourself. There is no need to go to the police.”

In Murshidabad district in last 15 days or so, two cases of rape and murder have taken place. The SP has refuted the charge.

The first incident took place at Ranitala. A schoolgirl’s body was recovered from a jute field on June 15. The victim’s family brought the allegation of rape and murder against a neighbour, Hakdar Sheikh. However, after arresting the accused, the SP said the girl was not raped. The final autopsy report is yet to come.

Two days back, a rape case was reported from Kharjuna in Barwan. A woman was raped and murdered in an abandoned staff quarter of a health centre. The SP denied that the woman was raped though the police haven’t got the final autopsy report.

Chowdhury on Tuesday went to Kharjuna to meet the victim’s family. He said, “The SP isn’t telling the truth and is misguiding the people. Somewhere he is saying that the reason for the murders is ‘love’ and somewhere he is casting aspersions on the character of the deceased. He said that the woman of Barwan village was killed for an illicit affair with a local youth. But there is no basis for this theory.”

Chowdhury said, “I plan to move court against the SP. The Congress party will observe a 12-hour Barwan block bandh on Wednesday against the rape and murder of the woman. If the SP continues his ‘dalali’, Congressmen will gherao his office. If needed I will march to Writers’ Buildings and meet the governor to discuss the SP.”

Giving a warning to the chief minister, the Congress leader said, “At Kamduni village the chief minister went to rebuke the villagers. She may also come here. But if she dares to rebuke the people of Barwan she will have to pay dearly for that."
