Commissioner of Police Durgapur-Asansol Ajoy Kumar Nanda said that the ten, who worked at two presses that printed local newspapers, were arrested last night, while six others were absconding.

The accused were tracked via the signals from the mobile phones that they’d snatched from the victim and her husband. The signals are tracked to their homes in Korapara and Bauripara, which the cops duly raided on Monday night. One mobile phone was recovered from the.

The victim worked at a diagnostics clinic, where she had struck a deep friendship with one of the doctors. This caused friction between the victim and her husband. On learning of their marital discord the doctor proposed to meet the husband, whom the duo called to the Piyala Kali Mandir near the Durgapur forests. The husband and the victim soon entered into a heated exchanged.

Suddenly a group of men turned up and dragged the victim into the nearby forest and overpowered and raped her. The friend and husband both fled, but managed to notify the authorities. On reaching the spot, cops found the victim sitting at the Kali temple, her clothes in tatters. Her jeans were found hanging for a nearby tree.

Nand told HT, “After conducting raids at night we arrested 10 people in connection with the rape. The accused all work at printing press in the City center from where several Bengali dailies, including CPI(M) mouthpiece Ganashakti, are printed. Seven out of ten arrested are contractual staff of ‘Ganashakti’.” Tests confirmed that the victim was raped. Police are also looking into why the trio met at such a lonely spot and for what reason. After news spread that Ganashakti staff were involved in the gang rape, CPI(M) district secretary Amal Haldar told HT that even Mamata Banerjee’s favourite newpapers were printed at the same place. “It is an intentional political conspiracy against us,” said Haldar.
