Parents of the first year student, who was allegedly gang raped by her seniors inside a Polytechnic College in Asansol-Durgapur, claimed on Saturday that the accused ruined their daughter’s life out of sheer revenge.
“My daughter had complained to my wife and son, a few days ago, that she was ragged by some of the seniors. The same gang has raped her. They planned it well in advance, as they wanted to take revenge,” the victim’s father told HT.
Sources said that the victim’s brother informed a friend, who is a student of the same college, about the incident. The friend in turn spoke to Shambo Mondal, the general secretary of the student’s union and requested him not to rag the girl, since he knew her.
Peeved with this, Shambo, who is also the principal accused in the case, threatened the girl not to inform her parents. They even threatened to attack her brother, should she confide her ordeal to parents. Though the girl later apologised to Shambo, she wasn’t spared and was lured to the college union room in the name of a birthday party, where she was gangraped.
The principal accused Sambhu Mondal, a student of the same college, and his accomplices has fled since an FIR was lodged on Thursday. Police have arrested the security guard, who was present at the spot. He was produced before the court and sent to judicial custody.
The TMCP has distanced itself from the accused Shambo Mondol. Ashok Rudra, TMCP distict president, said, “Mondal was a TMCP member, but was expelled before Biswakarma Puja as we had been getting complaints against him.”
The chief minister had recently announced a compensation package for rape victims. “Didi has assured compensation for rape victims. But can she erase the social stigma. I would appeal to her to take such criminal incidents seriously,” the victim said on Saturday.
The technical education department on Saturday suspended Rituparna Bose, the pricipal of the college.
“We haven’t received a specific complaint on the incident. We would move for swift measures against those accused o f perpetrating the outrage if someone from the family were to lodge a complaint with us,” Ajay Nand, commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate told HT.
