The lowest point of the day’s violence was the attack on the 193-year-old Presidency University, one of the most respected seats of learning in the country, allegedly in full view of the police.
Armed with sticks, iron rods and even a javelin, a group of men carrying Trinamool Congress flags barged into the university around 2 pm. Targeting the physics department laboratory, the men thoroughly wrecked its expensive equipment. Set up by Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, the Baker laboratory had recently completed its 100 years.
“They went on a rampage in full view of the police posted in the campus,” said University registrar Prabir Dasgupta.
