Teen pushed off train after refusing proposal

A 17 year-old student died when she was pushed off a running train between Nabadwip and Kalna after she turned down a proposal to go steady.


Sujaya Basak, a Class 12 student, quarreled with Shantu Basak according to fellow passengers on the train. An enraged Shantu pushed Sujaya from the train. She was taken to a hospital where she died later.

The student was taken to hospital where she died later. Her relatives and locals took the body to the Kalna railway police station and demanded action against the boy. “I have directed my additional-director-general of police and the officer-incharge of the police station concerned to take immediate action,” Dilip Mitra, the director-general of railway police told HT. However, despite the direction of the top cop of the railway police, locals said no action was taken.

Sujaya along with four other girls went to Nabwadip for their tuitions. According to sources, Shantu would go along with them and pester Sujaya. On Saturday after completion of tuitions, the girls boarded the ladies compartment and Shantu followed her.

As the train started moving, the duo got into a heated argument before Shantu pushed the girl off the train. The locals later took her to a hospital.

“We have information that after the duo got engaged in a heated argument, following which she jumped off the train,” said an officer of the railway police.
