The search for a ‘suitable boy’ on the night of Maha Shivaratri by a teenage girl ended up with being gangraped in East Jadavpur, a well-populated area of the city.
The incident comes a little over a year after the Park Street gang rape case raised a storm in the city and exactly three months after the New Delhi gang rape of a 23-year-old paramedic student inside a moving bus, which shook the conscience of the nation.
Two young girls had gone to a local temple at Shahid Smriti Colony, in East Jadavpur, to offer puja on Sunday night. Later, in the early hours of Monday morning, they went for a bath in a pond in the vicinity. Five youths who happened to spot them started off by first passing lewd comments and then teasing and abusing them in filthy language. They tried to drag them to a nearby building which was under construction.
One girl somehow managed to escape. The five assaulters forced the other girl into the building. Two of them raped her, while the others stood guard outside.
The girl who had escaped raised an alarm in the neighbourhood. Her colony neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued the hapless victim.
The locals managed to catch one of the rapists, Surajit Das, and handed him over to the police. They also took the victim to the East Jadavpur police station and lodged a complaint. The police raided the area for the other culprits and arrested another rapist, Sujay Dakua. The police are looking for the other three. The girl was sent for a medical examination.
